John takes on sin head on - we all still sin, Jesus will forgive us if we confess to him, everyone in the world had sinned.
1 John 1:8
If we think we have stopped sinning we are deceived.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

The great need is that there is a remedy for sin - forgiveness from Jesus!
If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
