Im this chapter Paul gives instructions for godly living and for marriage.
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.
Ephesians 5:3
In Paul's instructions it is not just about the external but also the internal, not about some line not to cross but rather to stay far away from (e.g. not even a hint is sexual immortality).
For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a person is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
Ephesians 5:5
It is important to know that these instructions are not simply "good ideas" but rather they affect our very lives.
For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)
Ephesians 5:8-9
This goodness is first a fruit if the Spirit but it also requires decisions and actions on our part: we make choices and God makes changes in our hearts and lives.
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 5:15-16
We also need not just to avoid evil but to look for opportunities to be a light and shine God's goodness to those around us.
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,
Ephesians 5:18
We should not get drunk but God has better things for us: being filled with his Spirit
Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
Ephesians 5:22, 25 NIV
Instructions to married couples: wives submit to husbands, husbands love and lay your life down for your wife.
