Galatians 2 - Nathanael

Paul is building a strong argument against the need to follow the law to be saved. Some people must have gone to the Galatian church and convinced them rusty to be true believers they must keep all of the ceremonial law such as circumcision.
This topic still holds confusion for believers in Christ today, less about circumcision but more about many old testament laws.

know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.
Galatians 2:16
It is clear that we are saved by faith in Christ alone. This is the "solo fide" (only faith) stance of Martin Luther and other reformers.

I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"
Galatians 2:21 NIV
We cannot gain righteousness before God by obeying the law - end of story.
