In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, 'This is mine,' both parties are to bring their cases before the judges. The one whom the judges declare guilty must pay back double to the other.

The laws that God gave to the Israelites were quite advanced, very comprehensive and very wise. They not only form the basis of many of our laws today but also ring with clarity and insight that is quite amazing even today.
These laws above, for instance, give the moral framework for lost property. The normal human response is typically "finders keepers". But here we see a higher moral standard that requires a double repayment.
God's laws are quite wonderful and good!
