After Jesus fasted the enemy demanded that He prove Himself with wonders and to worship him. After every request Jesus replied "it is written...". We also have the power of God's Word for us to flee from temptations, or to make the enemy flee from us. The enemy offered this world as if it is his. God's World after creation was perfect! The fallen world belongs to the enemy, but we are not of this world (even we live in it), if get rescued and separated for God.
A similar conversation to this one also happened with Jesus during crucifixion: Matthew 4:6 "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: " 'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone." God is God and does not need to explain his Deity. Mathew 27:42 "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him".
Matthew 4:17 tells us about the first preaching from Jesus. It was not the ten commandments given to Moses only " Repent, for the Kingdom of heavens has come near". It reminds me His holiness, if we want to get closer to Him we need to repent in a regular basis.
