"Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."
Acts 1:11
It is exciting to think about Jesus's return when he comes down from the clouds in a very visible way!
So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
Acts 1:11, 23-26 NIV
Casting of lots isn't a primary method of guidance and has certain parameters around it. 1) it is used for a decision that is righteous and God wants us to make. 2) it is used to distinguish between two equally valid choices, both of which would be acceptable before God.
3) it is entered into with prayer and committing the result to God
