I love these chapters of John because Jesus is having many conversations with people trying to show them that he is the Messiah--that he is God in the flesh. He shows some signs as well, such as healing a man who was born blind, and he forgave a woman caught in adultery and saved her from being stoned to death by the authorities. Jesus spoke to many people and they wanted to kill him because he was claiming to be God, but they did not believe him. They thought that he is just a man claiming to be God, but he had not demonstrated it yet. Jesus said that they will know for certain after he is crucified and rises again from the dead. Jesus had perfect confidence and knowledge of who he was and he spoke plainly about it. Even though he had things to say that were difficult for the people to hear, it seems that he was speaking gently and with respect as we were discussing in 1 Peter 3 about giving the reason for our hope in God.
