1 Corinthians 11 - Nathanael

This chapter covers some issues which some people believe are culturally bound (head coverings and prayer) and others which all agree apply today but there are some differences in how people apply the statements (taking Lord's supper in unworthy manner).

Let me start by saying that I don't believe these statements are culturally bound. I believe that God included them because he wanted us to be aware and protected.

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.
1 Corinthians 11:1
This is quite a high call. I strive to be worthy to say this as Paul did.

Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. But every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved.
1 Corinthians 11:4-5
The instructions about head covering are largely ignored today. Paul in verse 10 says that it is because of the angels. I believe that this statement refers to Satan's angels and that the head covering is a spiritual protection for women against the attacks of these angels. Ignoring this instruction doesn't mean that someone is going to hell but rather that they are opening themselves up to attack and difficulties that they could avoid.

Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves
1 Corinthians 11:28‭-‬29 NIV
We need to consider others in the body of Christ as we eat and we need to remember Christ and the price he paid for us.
