Romans 10 is another chapter with some very important verses that speak to me every time I read them.
Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.
Romans 10:3
When we try to earn our way to God we are actually rebelling against him. He has made a way - the only way - to God and to salvation. It is through Jesus and faith in and through him alone!
If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Romans 10:9-10
Believing in the context of faith in Jesus is a heart action not a mind action. That is one reason that I prefer the word "trust" over "believe" in such a context.
for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
Romans 10:13
A powerful promise and instruction to us as we need help and salvation. When we find ourselves in need we should call on the name of Jesus!
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
Romans 10:14
This reminds us of the importance of not being silent but speaking to others about Jesus.
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
Romans 10:17 NIV
An important clarification of the origin of faith. It has its beginning and fulfillment in Jesus. His word both creates faith and it is what we should have faith in (as opposed to our own thoughts ite ideas)
