The religious people were pressing Jesus to give them a sign from heaven that he is the Messiah. Really, Jesus had already been giving a lot of signs that he is the Messiah, and his birth and family line and the timing, and many miracles and things that he said and did were confirming that he is the promised savior of the world. Why did people not believe and then ask for a sign to justify their unbelief? Jesus said that they would see the sign of Jonah--because he would die and be buried for a short time--not even a full three days, and then he rose again from the dead in power! Even though they saw this sign, not all of them believed in him. Lord God, please deepen my faith and trust in you, and please help me to never demand a sign to see more of who you are or make demands a prerequisite for my surrender to you.
