Jesus knew they were trying to trap and trick him but he called them out and refuted their efforts. He is a master - the wisest - debater
When they heard this, they were amazed.
Matthew 22:22
They saw that no one could overwhelm him by knowledge.
So they left him and went away. No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
Matthew 22:46 NIV
We see here that not only is his teaching the most profound but that Jesus is also the smartest and wisest.
